Heat pumps are no more immune to problems than any other climate control system, especially during high-usage times like summer. As you rely on your heat pump to keep cool this summer, remember that it’s more likely for the system to develop problems the more you use it. Let’s take a look at some of the problems your heat pump might develop, and how to respond to them.
Short Cycling
Short cycling is a problem in which your heat pump will turn itself on and off every couple of minutes. This drastically increases the level of strain on the system, making it far more likely for other problems to develop and shortening the life of the entire system. This can be caused by a number of different problems, like a faulty thermostat or a damaged compressor. The point, though, is that it’s bad news for the health of your system. Call for repairs as soon as you notice this harmful behavior.
Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant leaks are no joke, and can threaten the health of the entire system just like short cycling can. The system isn’t designed to consume refrigerant, but to recycle it back and forth between liquid and gaseous states. A refrigerant leak will drain the system of the fluid that it needs to operate, resulting in a steady loss of output and eventually causing the entire system to break down. If you notice liquid dripping from your system, you should call for repairs right away. The leak will need to be patched, and the lost refrigerant refilled, in order to preserve the health and operation of the heat pump.
