As we move further into summer, you’re going to start using your air conditioner to keep cool more often. That means more wear and tear on the system, which means more chances for something to break. One of the first signs that there’s a problem with your air conditioner is strange noises coming from inside it. So, let’s go over some of the strange air conditioner noises that indicate a problem with your system.
Grinding
The air handler is the part of the system responsible for circulating air throughout the house while the system is operating. Moving that much air generates quite a bit of friction, so to compensate for it the air handler motor is equipped with oiled bearings that help it to run more smoothly. The problem is that these bearings can wear out before the entire system does, causing friction on the motor to increase and producing a loud grinding sound. If you hear that sound, call for repairs right away. Otherwise, it’s quite possible that the system will overheat and burn itself out.
Short Cycling
Short cycling is a behavior in which your air conditioner turns itself on and off every couple of minutes. This dramatically increases the amount of wear and tear on the system, resulting in a shortened lifespan and increased chance of part failure. Short cycling is caused by number of things. It’s possible that a thermostat has malfunctioned, and is sending bad signals to the air conditioner. It’s also possible that the air conditioner compressor is damaged, throwing off the rhythm of the system and causing it to behave erratically. Regardless of the cause, short cycling needs to be dealt with ASAP if you want to protect your system.
