Watch Out for These Air Conditioning Problems

As the days start to warm up and you start to rely on your air conditioner more often, the strain on the system will increase significantly. All of that wear and tear makes it far more likely for issues to develop with the air conditioner over the summer. Time is of the essence when it comes to protecting your system from damage, so it’s a good idea to be able to identify issues as quickly as possible. Let’s take a look at some of the more common air conditioning problems that you might run into.

Coil Ice

The air conditioner cools your home by evaporating refrigerant in the evaporator coil, which absorbs thermal energy from the air in the ducts. This coil relies on a constant stream of warm air from the ducts in order to prevent from freezing over. If the stream of air is shut off, the air around the coil will get colder and colder until the part freezes over. While the evaporator coil is frozen, it will be unable to siphon thermal energy from the home’s air. It can also cause an eventual system breakdown if not taken care of promptly.

Air Handler Issues

The air handler is the part of your air conditioner that is responsible for circulating air throughout the house. The air handler motor is put under a lot of strain during operation, so to keep operating smoothly it uses a number of oiled bearings. These bearings will wear down over time, causing the friction on the motor to increase. This produces a loud grinding sound. If the bearings are not replaced in time, the motor will overheat and burn out.
