Does your water heater leave you feeling a chill? Here are some common reasons why your water isn’t staying hot and suggestions on troubleshooting.
Your Pilot Light Is Out
If you have a gas water heater, the pilot light being out is common, and probably the first place you should start. The pilot light ignites the burner that heats the water in your tank, so if it’s out, the water will not get hot. To fix this, locate the pilot light and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for relighting it. Make sure to perform this task safely, and if you’re unsure, give our Tuckers plumbing team a call, and we’ll be happy to help!

Worn Out Heating Elements
Rather than using a pilot light, electric water heaters have heating elements that warm the water. Over time, these elements can wear out or fail, creating inconsistent hot water. You can use a multimeter to test the heating elements, and if they’re faulty, you’ll need to replace the elements. Make sure to turn off your power supply or the appropriate breakers before attempting any repairs.
Sediment Buildup in the Tank
Does your area have hard water? Then sediment buildup might be the cause of your hot water troubles. Over time, minerals from hard water can settle at the bottom of the water heater tank, reducing the efficiency of the heater and leading to lukewarm water. Flushing the tank periodically can help remove this buildup. To do this, turn off the power or gas supply, drain the tank, and then refill it.

Faulty Thermostat Settings
Having a thermostat set too low is one reason your water doesn’t get hot enough. Check the thermostat settings on your water heater and make sure it’s set to the recommended temperature, typically around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If adjusting the thermostat doesn’t solve the issue, the thermostat may need to be inspected or replaced.
Inadequate Tank Size
No one likes a cold shower! If you often run out of hot water, your tank might be too small for your household’s needs. Consider upgrading to a larger tank or a tankless water heater that provides hot water on demand. The Tuckers plumbing team can help you choose the right size and type of water heater for your home. Give us a call and we’ll help you find the best solution for your home and provide expert installation for boilers, water heaters, and whatever else your home may need.
