Furnace Problems You Need to Know About

Furnaces are most likely to develop problems during the winter, as it’s the time of year when they see the most use. Since furnace problems are progressive, you’re going to need to keep an eye out for warning signs that your system is in need of repair. The faster we can repair your furnace, the more damage we can prevent.

Strange Noises

One of the first warning signs that your furnace is in trouble is the advent of strange noises during operation. If you’ve had your furnace for any length of time, you’re probably already familiar with the normal noises that it makes. If you hear any unusual sounds coming from the furnace — booming, grinding, etc. — you need to call for repairs right away. Nothing good comes from ignoring this.

Drops in Output

Sudden or steady drops in output are a major warning sign when it comes to furnace issues. This could indicate any number of issues, from a failing ignition system to a burned-out air handler motor. Drops in output tend to indicate an advanced issue with the furnace, something that could threaten a total breakdown if not dealt with. You should definitely turn the furnace off and call for repairs if you notice this.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is caused by heat becoming trapped in the furnace, typically due to a clogged air filter. The limit switch then activates, shutting down the system in order to protect it from overheating. If the core problem is not dealt with, though, the furnace will keep turning on and off every couple of minutes. This ramps up the wear and tear on the system until it eventually breaks down. If your furnace is turning on and off every few minutes, it needs repairs.
