Options If You Need a New AC Before Summer

Is your home ready for the first true day of summer heat—whenever that may be? We can help see that your current system is in top shape with routine maintenance or air conditioning repair in Rockville, MD.

But repairs and maintenance may no longer be enough. This spring might be when you replace an aging AC that drains too much power and costs too much in repairs. If it looks like it’s time for a new AC (and our technicians can always help you make this choice if you’re unsure), you have several options for a new unit.

Why Not Just Get the Same Type of Unit?

There’s nothing wrong with this. You won’t end up with the exact same type, because you’ve probably had your current air conditioner for 10 to 15 years, and AC technology has changed over that time. If you buy a similar unit to what you already have, you can expect the new one to have better energy efficiency. Whether you want to invest money in higher efficiency or look at different models of air conditioners is still something to consider.

The High-Efficiency Air Conditioner

The efficiency of a cooling system is measured as seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER). The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit. If your current AC is mid-efficiency, it probably has SEER of 15. Special high-efficiency air conditioners can have SEER higher than 20. To save energy, these air conditioners use variable speed fans and compressors and inverter technology. Although high-efficiency units are more expensive upfront to install, they can pay back their cost in energy savings in a few years.

The Heat Pump

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can switch the direction it runs so it also operates as a heating system. If you’re interested in installing a heat pump, it must replace both your current AC and heater. Getting a heat pump only to cool the house is a waste of money! We advise thinking about a heat pump if you have an electric furnace you’re also thinking about replacing.

Ductless Mini Splits

You may not have a central air conditioner at all, but instead rely on window or wall ACs in different rooms because there aren’t any ducts. The good news is that you don’t need ducts to have a powerful air conditioner that sends cool air to rooms across your home. A ductless mini split has a single outdoor condenser which then connects to multiple indoor air handlers mounted on the walls of rooms. Going ductless has many additional benefits, such as zone control and improved air quality. Most ductless mini splits are heat pumps as well, so you have ductless heating and cooling.
