Problems That Can Affect Your Water Line

Your water line is the pipe that runs from the municipal water main into your home. All water that flows into your home moves through the water line. So, it’s a good idea to make sure that your water line is kept in the best possible condition. There are a number of issues that can affect your water line that you need to be aware of. Let’s take a look at some of those problems now.

Tree Roots

Tree root structures can cover a massive amount of ground, far beyond the visible part of the tree. Oftentimes, a tree root will find a water line and puncture it to get at the water. Once the tree root has penetrated the water line, it will start to expand. Eventually, the tree root structure in the water line can become so extensive that it restricts the flow of water through it. Make sure that your water line is checked on a fairly regular basis in order to avoid this problem.

Lime Scale

Lime scale is caused by hard water, which is water with a high magnesium and calcium content. As water flows through the pipes, it deposits small amounts of these minerals on the walls. Eventually, these deposits build up into lime scale, which restricts the flow of water through the pipe. A water treatment system can protect your plumbing system from lime scale, but that does not extend to your water line. The best thing to do to protect against lime scale is to have your water line professionally inspected at least once a year. If the lime scale is caught early enough, it can be scraped out before it hardens.
